I remember reading an article a couple of years back about how Italy would have to keep inflation below 3% per annum in order to qualify for Euro membership.

I also remember laughing out loud when I read it.

The whole thing was a pipe dream from the beginning.

Well I did also .. but sometimes like with children .. they have to learn the hard way

it wasn't inflation, it was deficit. Germany, Iyaly and Portugal are over it already. France and spain close to it.
