Geology Picture of the Week, November 3-9, 2002

KEYWORDS: eruption; etna; lavaflow; sicily
Probably the most important, and most tragic, geological story of the week was the earthquake in Italy that caused the deaths of 26 first-grade school children. That event should serve to remind us that while geological processes can be fascinating and beatiful, they can also be dangerous and deadly. And it should also serve to remind us that research into both the causes of such events and the engineering that can help to prevent such tragedies is still quite justified.

Don't forget Alaska just had a serious quake on Sunday (7.9) that was didn't do much damage only because of the remoteness! At 2:00pm the pipeline flow was stopped to handle any problems because of the quake.

the pipeline flow was stopped

At a few points the support crossbar fell out of its bracket leaving the pipeline hanging by its own weight. This is probably not serious and should be fixed up in due course. Sideboom tractors are on the way.

I used to work out at pump station #12 there between Glenallen and Valdez (Mile 62 I believe) and used to se a lot of motion in the pipeline fof a variety of reasons. That pipeline is well put together and not to concerned about it taking a little abuse.

pump station #12

Worked down there, too. Pretty hard to damage a pipeline significantly.
