About the Book:

Our story takes place during the 70s. Cover bands (artists who do recorded hits) on the East Coast were incredibly popular. The likes of Twisted Sister, Cyndi Lauper and dozens of other artists honed their chops doing cover material. Severe Tire Damage is about a singer, Rosie, on Long Island, who joins a rock band and tours the Tri-State area (N.Y., Long Island, Jersey, Connecticut) for five years. Her band performs the likes of Zeppelin, the Stones, Queen, the Kinks, Aerosmith and Heart. Nothing is as it seems, because while each band member brings talent, they also bring their own baggage. The race is on for them to get chops together, get out on the road and eventually cut a demo so the band can get a record deal-while growing up in the process. This 'baptism by fire' means they learn by doing. As the climb to the top begins, cracks begin to show-dreams get diluted in their race to get to the 'big time.' Rosie breaks an unwritten law, (thou shalt never go out with your band member) and this only serves to complicate the mix. When they sink their teeth into a business that's known for biting back, each musician suffers differently, and among them-it comes down to who blinks first. The story turns on the music of rock and roll, but takes its spin from life itself.

Barbara Bitela:

New York born Barbara Bitela has been a musician for more than thirty years, and has experienced a variety of successes in much of what the music business had to offer. Vocally trained since six, she has appeared in amateur musicals and theater. During the seventies, her bands toured the Tri-State area. During the eighties, Barbara joined original groups and did background vocal sessions for small recording studios, independent labels, and released several singles including Jungle Love on RCA. A Christian, she writes fiction, is politically active and is still a rocker. Barbara is married, lives and works in Northern California, where she also coaches music for and sings with her church. She's been known to play air guitar when the song is right and will just about always sing in the shower, because the acoustics are so good.
