It adds an essay writing test which on the surface sounds great. However, an essay is difficult to evaluate objectively.

As long as they don't ask the test taker's gender or race in the application, or rate on the basis of political orientation then a subjective component to evaluation may be considered as randomly unbiased.

Essay topics should be chosen free of politics or identity profiling. For example, a committee should reject an essay topic dealing with affirmative action.

What topics would be fair game?

Funny, I can't think of one topic that would ensure a person's political leanings would remain private.

So much for that idea.
