On the contrary, I love to read about history, politics, philosophy, and literature. Heck, I even enjoy classical music and the occasional opera! Just don't force it down my throat, and don't ruin my life if I'm not good at it. Just because I'm not good at conjugating German verbs or interpreting sonnets doen't mean I can't do a bang up job of solving 2nd order partial differential equations.

I'm a physics major at the U of TN, Knoxville. I thought of taking the Engineering Physics path for this very reason. UT doesn't force nearly as much stuff on engineers as they do on the so-called "pure sciences" like chemistry, biology, physics, etc. The College of Engineering makes their own graduation requirements and takes care of their own pretty well, while physics got cubbyholed into the College of Arts and Sciences, which requires this stuff.

Hey, we technical types need to unite, can't let the man keep us down, eh? :o)

It's the same at Pitt; Physics is normally 39 Humanities/Liberal Arts credits, Engineering is 18 + 3 for writing if one doesn't have high enough SAT's or AP's.
I draw the line at opera, but I am actually better at piano and English than Calc... Have you thought of Chem as a 2nd major? At Pitt it is only 30 extra credits...

Man, I used to think just like you guys.

First, my bona fides: B.S. Nuclear Engineering from Penn State University, currently completing M.S. in Computer Science.

If you think that your life and work will be all 'bout engineering, chemistry, or whatever, you are in for a very rude shock. Even within those disciplines, the human element prevails mightily. You may have some starry-eyed notions that sheer technical capability will win over the day, when in fact grubby politics, deft maneuvering, a glib tongue, and psychology are at least as important. Think Marxism is crap? Sure it is, but explaining why in a coherent fashion is important, along with knowing why people are drawn to it and continue to be drawn to it long after it has proven not only worthless, but supremely destructive.

The world is larger than your current outlook, is all I am trying to say. You will only benefit from enlarging your worldview.
