Who foots bill for Wellstone memorial/rally? Questions raised as to use of military as support staff for event

A memorial service for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, that some say more closely resembled a political rally, has raised questions as to whether or not taxpayers should be reimbursed for the cost of flying a large delegation of mostly Democratic congressmen, senators and their spouses and staffs from Washington, D.C., to Minnesota aboard U.S. Air Force jets, according to a report in Insight magazine.

According to Pentagon sources, the Air Force supplied two C-32 aircraft, the military equivalent of the Boeing 757, and one C-9, the military equivalent of a McDonnell Douglas DC-9.

According to the Insight report, the cost to taxpayers of the congressional flights, with crew, was approximately $119,961.

A 1964 Department of Defense directive authorizes the use of military aircraft for official business of Congress, or to attend the funeral of a sitting member, only if a request is made to the ''secretary of defense by the president of the Senate, the speaker of the House or their designated representatives.''

A spokesman for Vice President Dick Cheney, constitutionally designated as the president of the Senate, says Cheney made no request of the secretary of defense for military support to transport the congressional delegation to the Wellstone memorial.

A spokesman for Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., confirmed that Hastert made no such request either, according to the Insight report.

The political memorial for Wellstone was attended by Democratic Party activists and luminaries from all over the country, including former President Bill Clinton, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., former Vice President Al Gore, former Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey (who was appointed to the ballot in his state when the incumbent Democrat was caught up in a bribery scandal) and former Vice President Walter Mondale, who will replace Wellstone on the ballot for next Tuesday's election.

According to the Insight report, the arena crowd of 15,000 cheered remarks by Wellstone's son David, who said, ''We all know what we have to do.''

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Rick Kahn, a close friend and Wellstone campaign treasurer, ''shifted the tone of the event from a memorial service to full-throated, foot-stomping, fist-pumping political rally.''

The paper reported Kahn told the crowd: ''We are begging you to help us win this Senate election for Paul Wellstone,'' and called on the rallying Democrats and others to ''help us win this race.''

KARE-TV, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, reported viewers were outraged, saying what began as a poignant farewell turned into a political rally for national Democrats.

The station reported receiving more than 100 telephone calls complaining about the coverage.

According to the Insight report, uniformed members of the U.S. Marine Corps were also used as escorts for those attending the event and may have also provided ground transportation.

Sources say the delegation that left Andrews Air Force base yesterday for Minneapolis, and returned late last night, was comprised of an unknown number of senators, 11 members of the House of Representatives and ''some spouses and staff members.''

The total came to 120 people.

Aboard the return flight to Washington, one senator reportedly called the event ''a damned political rally.''

According to the Insight report, another shrugged, ''Well, that was fitting for Wellstone. He always went up to the line – and jumped over it.''

Who rented the arena? That's a big place. If it was donated, doesn't that violate some campaign finance law?

Did Terry McAuliffe rent it?

Geraldine Ferraro and John Corzine have assured us that the DNC had NOTHING to do with this - it was the 'boys'. Did the 'boys' ante up the money for the arena?

I just sent the following email to the 4 FCC people listed above:

Dear Chairman Powell and Commissioners Abernathy, Copps, and Martin:

I am OUTRAGED!

And I am DEMANDING that the Republican Party IMMEDIATELY be granted EQUAL TIME or the stations/networks be DENIED their license renewals.

Television stations/networks broadcast a LIVE, THREE-and a HALF HOUR POLITICAL PEP RALLY in the FRAUDULENT name of a "Memorial" service for the late MN Senator Paul Wellstone!

Republicans were BOOED, as was INDEPENDENT MN Gov. Jesse Ventura!---At a "MEMORIAL" service?

And the purely POLITICAL chants to vote (and work) to elect former Vice President Walter Mondale to replace Wellstone and to abandon the Republican causes were OUTRAGEOUS at a TRUE "MEMORIAL."

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

(Me)

That was really ugly and I apologize. :(

No it wasn't "ugly", a dead socialist is a beautiful thing for America. If they all died we could have a free country again.

Trust your instincts.

Geraldine Ferraro and John Corzine have assured us that the DNC had NOTHING to do with this - it was the 'boys'. Did the 'boys' ante up the money for the arena?

Well since this was SUPPOSE to be a Memorial Service for a deceased Senator, at least that is what the local stations were told .. I am going to guess that the arena might have been donated for that reason alone ..

However, I am sure that there was high security that was needed along with all the other services that were given .. plus I am sure extra police were called in to handle the traffic

I also heard that many many folks were bused in to attend this service, which would explain all the rally signs

As for Geraldine Ferraro and John Corzine .. BULLSHEET ..

And for them to turn running with their tail between their legs just shows how low and petty the Democrats are. As usual they can not take responsiblity of their OWN actions

Tell me .. how was it the son's fault that Bill and Hillary were dancing in the aisle ..

How was it their fault that Tom Harkin threw off his jacket and onto the floor ..

Are the trying to tell me that the sons now speak for Senator Harkin??

Are they telling me that the son's made everyone boo Trent Lent so bad to force him to leave???

GIVE ME A BREAK

Okay, e-mail addy for the Star Tribune IS: Opinion@startribune.com. Tell them what you think. The WORST one to get into is pioneerplanet.com. They, in typical Democrat fashion, make it as difficult as possible to tell them anything. Disgusting picture on their homepage of a very somber hill and bill. THROW UP. I asked them why didn't they use a more honest picture of them dancing, laughing, singing and celebrating. BARF. WCCO.com is bspope@wcco.cbs.com. HAVE A GOOD TIME FOLKS, it's only our money.

Yes,it is accurate! traffic was way backed up in St. Paul where the rally was! I didn't make it to the rally in time, but this whole circus spectacle has got the base here very energized and fired up!

Seems to me this article fails to say who DID request the planes.

Let me tell you how the real world works. Some Congressional aide called some poor unit PAO and told her "kick the tire, light the fire, the Senator's on the way. Your CO will confirm later." And he'd better. The only really non-partisan thing about D.C. is that They Are To Be Obeyed.

Good Post. This whole thing is sick! I’ve been to funerals, memorials, wakes, viewings, and burials, and never saw anything like the Wellstone bash. But mostly as I watched and listened to the replays of the rally, I was struck by the similarity of Nazi-Germany youths shouting slogans and demanding change (for reasons they knew not), and the crowd last night shouting for war(s) on something / anything (for reasons they knew not). Liberals are bad enough, but outrageously RADICAL liberals can be a national security concern.

The solution: divvy up the cost & let each Senator & other various poobahs pay for the plane.

But *someone* must've authorized this. It shouldn't be that hard to find out who did it.
