"How long does it take to "refresh" FR these days?
Well Bob, my wife is in and out the shower before my screen clears!"
For me it's been a half a box of Cheese Nips! (Timewise, I probably could've eaten the whole box but decided to show some restraint.) :)

Beta.freerepublic.com...is moving a little faster....but don't all try it at once!...LOL

but in the perl/database area, either processor load, or bandwidth between the web server and the database ... My gut feeling is... ridiculous. If load were the problem it would self-correct. Most FReepers have given up by now.
Performance was fine during the early days of the sniper episode. There is an internet related problem or a hardware problem -- possibly disk space or disk errors. I've seen network cards get slow. That sounds odd, but they can develop problems that cause numerous retries.

I just know that somehow I'm gonna get blamed for this.

Nah he just needs to hire some more gerbils to turn that wheel to get the electricity flowing. I recommend hamsters for the night shift...

Is it possible that layoffs at the hosting company caused this, Willie?
:)

If the tracert is indicating a router which isn't functioning properly, why doesn't the gateway simply reroute?

I think it could be a few things. First it might be that FR is being over loaded and being out grown. Take a look at the sniper threads. They were massive and there were multiple postings having 2-3000 responses on a daily basis. Haven't really seen that before.
Second I happened to notice that this last campaign for funding took longer than usually meaning there might be allot more users and lurkers here. I dont know if that has any thing to do with it or not. I just noticed that.
Or this could be a denial of services being targeted to FR from the DEMs. After seeing what there cabable of these last few days I wouldn't rule that out. The evil bast@rds
be patient and support FR. These people do allot more than what most freepers understand. And ask your self what would you have done if FR went off line in the last 4 weeks. or permanently.
I dont know what Id do.

I was looking at the counts on threads -- if it gets much worse, we'll start looking like Lucianne.com.

I certainly don't feel scorched. No problem. I'm not privy to any financial details, and don't want to be. I make what few donations I can, and that's all I know. I wish I could do more, as I feel certain from the amount of money raised, noone is getting comfortable, much less rich. It seems to me it would take ALOT to run a place like this. Perhaps what we could ask about doing, is maybe a seperate donation for site upgrades. I've been told it is expensive, time consuming, but worthwhile. (when asking about my own home computers). It's too late to help right now, but would sure be nice to have in place by 2004. Just an idea, see what you think.

I suppose there is reason for concern about overall Internet bandwith as the telecoms continue their freefall into the dumpster. ("Gotta reduce excess capacity" is the mantra of the "free" traders) Unfortunately, just as the Kaliforia electrical brownouts, the result of shedding "excess" capacity is inability to satisfy peak demand periods (except for those willing and capable of paying exorbitant prices for a "scarce" commodity.) IMHO, there are plenty of situations where the laisezz-faire "let-the-market" fruitcake fanatics should go suck eggplants.
That aside, I doubt that is the source of our current woes here at FR. The rest of the Internet seems to be working hunky-dorey. (Not that I'm entirely satisfied with my cable ISP provider. I think they suck eggplants too.)
I certainly don't want to sound critical of our forum host, but the silence is deafening regarding this problem. It is also VERY uncharacteristic to not get some feedback on the situation. I pray that there is no family crisis that is causing this inattentiveness.
