ABOARD THE HARRY S. TRUMAN -- Warriors, it has been said, are the last people who want to bring a nation to war. They know well the sacrifices involved.

So it's not completely unexpected on this Norfolk-based aircraft carrier to find anxiety and trepidation mixed with confidence and a sense of duty among the 6,000 sailors and Marines planning to deploy by year's end.

The Truman could arrive in the Persian Gulf by early next year, when some experts believe a U.S. war against Iraq, if approved, could begin.
