The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home

.

.

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

Snow Bunny

.

.

.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.

.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

High Flight

High Flight was composed by
Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr.,
an American serving with the
Royal Canadian Air Force.

He was born in Shanghai, China
in 1922, the son of missionary
parents, Reverend and Mrs. John
Gillespie Magee; his father was an
American and his mother was
originally a British citizen.

He came to the U.S. in 1939
and earned a scholarship to Yale,
but in September 1940 he enlisted
in the RCAF and was graduated as
a pilot. He was sent to England for
combat duty in July 1941.

In August or September 1941,
Pilot Officer Magee composed

High Flight

He then sent a copy to his parents.
Several months later, on
December 11, 1941 his Spitfire
collided with another plane over
England and Magee, only 19 years
of age, crashed to his death.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc

His remains are buried in the
churchyard cemetery at Scopwick, Lincolnshire.

The poem, High Flight, has over
the years become a mantra to pilots.
It is a tribute to, and in memory of
pilots of all generations.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high unsurpassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee
No 412 squadron, RCAF
Killed 11 December 1941

GOLDEN CORRAL’S 2nd NATIONAL
MILITARY APRECIATION NIGHT EVENT
OFFERS “THANK YOU” TO NATION’S PATRIOTS
WITH FREE DINNER

Veterans Day is a celebration to honor America’s military personnel for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Golden Corral and the Disabled American Veterans are joining forces nationwide for the second year in a row to honor our nation’s heroes with . . .

MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT 2002
on Monday, November 11th - from 5-9 p.m.

Every Golden Corral restaurant will offer a free dine-in dinner buffet to all veterans and active duty military personnel as our way of showing gratitude to all the men and women who serve and are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect ours.

This year, United States Army General Norman Schwarzkopf is supporting Military Appreciation Night though a public service announcement (PSA), which encourages all veterans and active duty military to participate and be recognized for their sacrifice and dedication to protecting our nation’s freedom.

“My greatest honor has been protecting this country’s freedom,” said General Norman Schwarzkopf in the PSA.

“This night is to thank the men and women of our military for their countless hours of service that often go unnoticed.”

On Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11th, from 5-9 pm, all 400+ Golden Corral restaurants spanning 39 states will offer veterans and retired and active duty members of the U.S. military a free dine-in dinner buffet plus beverage. This offer is also extended to members of the U.S. Reserves and the National Guard. All that is required to receive the free dine-in buffet is that all honored military guests state their military status when coming through the ordering line the night of the event.

Again in 2002, a key aspect of the Military Appreciation Night local celebration will be the presence of members of the Disabled American Veterans organization in our restaurants throughout Veterans Day event. Our partnership with the DAV allows us an opportunity to provide them with local exposure for their specific needs in all communities where we have restaurants, and the DAV will be the beneficiary of any donations collected throughout the Military Appreciation event.

Good morning, Snow Bunny!

Good morning, TROOPS!

Good morning everyone!

Re: barf alerts

I just read that VP Cheney was told he wasn't welcome at the Wellstone memorial.

He should be GLAD that he wasn't part of the barf crowd!

Good morning from VA Beach!

Weather here is crappy as hell: chilly drizzle practically non-stop the past three days. Here's a pic of a deer from my mom and dad's place about 30 min southeast of Louisville, KY.

They have 33 acres of land and don't allow hunting and Dad even sets out salt blocks for them so they see deer a lot. Their dog must have been in the house when Mom was taking this pic otherwise he'd be chasing it. *LOL* Like a 125 lb Doberman is really gonna catch a deer of that size.

Everyone is doing ok here, have a great day everyone!

Morning Tonk-

I sent a note out and am working my way through the list.

Anything to lift the spirits of our brave men and women in uniform...

A HARD LESSON THAT SOME HAVE YET TO LEARN:

October 2001

Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar:

"The situation where we are now, there are two things:
either death or victory. To those who are fighting and bombarding us, they should understand the Afghan man is a fighter willing to die for jihad."

June 1944

General George S. Patton:

"I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country..."
