Schoolboy died but saved his big brother Oct 29 2002
The Western Mail
A SCHOOLBOY died saving his older brother from being crushed under a falling tree during the storms, it was revealed last night.
Christopher Vince, 12, was walking in woods on the outskirts of Norwich on Sunday with his 16-year-old brother Ben, sister Jessica, 10, their dog and a family friend when tragedy struck.
His father, Jonathan, 47, said Christopher - "who liked to be brave" - saw the tree begin to topple as his unsuspecting brother was trying to put a lead on their border collie dog, Jack.
"Christopher then pushed Ben out of the way of the tree," said Mr Vince, from Costessey, near Norwich.
But the tree crashed down on Christopher, killing him and the dog instantly.
His brother escaped with only slight injuries.
"Ben wants everybody to know that he is proud of his brother," said Mr Vince.
The details of the tragedy emerged as Britain counted the estimated £50m cost of the storms which claimed seven lives, including a motorist who died on the A40 near Bwlch, Brecon, when a large branch hit his car.
Across Wales the big cleanup began yesterday as did efforts to restore power to some 65,000 homes. Many were expected to be reconnected by 10pm last night.
Train services also faced continued disruption, while some schools in North Wales were closed.
I hope to meet him in heaven.
We would all like to be brave - Christopher clearly WAS brave!
Rest in peace, hero!
You have to look to the UK for the story of heroism; a 12 year old boy who unselfishly gave his life for his brother.
You can be sure he was welcomed with cheers in the Kingdom of Heaven.
