I think you are right on the money; your assessment is absolutely correct. They have to say something but have to be very careful: what if the Earth is really flat, and they'll be burned at the stake. It is indeed amazing that they even said as much as they did.

One of the nails in this guys coffin was the original attention by the Student Newspaper, The Wheel. Kind of gives you some hope for the future, doesn't it.

Additionally, you will find some mention of last years devestating 3 of 4 articles in William and Mary Quarterly, one of THE history journals that slammed him after the controversey could be looked at in depth.
