only one small criticism: they would voted for Ho Chi Minh, for sure, as Ike recognized when he remarked: "We couldn't let the vote take place [as promised] because Ho would in hands down, and we can't let a Communist win". There is some error in memory here, but the statement is basically accurate. The US denies the Vietnamese people an election as promised, and we end up slaughtering them by the millions. I doubt if the people in Vietnam were truly Communist. My assessment is they were nationalists who wanted their country back and if being Commie got help in doing this, so be it. The US foreign policy is, even today, stupid.

My objective is to either stop or minimize the deaths of millions, perhaps billions of people in the coming war between great powers. US foreign policy IS stupid today, but not even close for the reasons that you imagine. US foreign policy today suffers from turning a blind eye to the threat posed by Communist tyrants, by providing them with trade, aid and credibility they don't deserve and ultimately by default being overly pro-Communist, not anti-Communist. You are very mistaken regarding the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was a just war for America though we may have fought it unjustly by indiscriminately targeting enemy civilians. It would have been better off if we had limited our assistance to democratic South Vietnam to military advisors. As it was our involvement only slowed the murderous Communist onslaught and enslavement of all innocent Vietnamese who lived in both the north and the south.

Name one other nation in all the history of the world that gave some 55,000 of her sons & daughters (Plus six of the finest men I ever had the pleasure to serve under or to command.) to free the peoples of another country like we did in Nam?

Just talk to any Vietnamese folks in "Little Saigon" in Orange County, California.
Especially if they (or someone they know/knew) got a free stay in one of the
"re-education" camps.

People look at you weird when you say Vietnam was a very important stumbling block thrown in front of communist advances.

The so-called prevailing wisdom (that comes from hearing the same rhetoric, usually from liberals and the left) is so subconciously embedded, when you say something contrary to it, people look at you like you have two heads.

I happen to agree that VietNam was important, not only for stopping the dominoes, and eventually turning the dominoes back in on communism.

It taught us a lot, not only about war tactics, but about the motivations of the press and the protestors.
