In Jerusalem, the founder of Israel's premier counterterrorist unit hailed the operation.

High praise from the best there is at this.

Meanwhile, one hostage, Mark Podlesny, questioned Russian TV footage that showed the terrorists' corpses in the theater amid liquor bottles and syringes.

The Russians should have shoved pork in the terrorists' mouths instead.

There were 750 corpses in the theater that night. Russian courage brought most of them back from the dead.

When asked about the use of the gas, Fleischer said, "We don't know what all the facts are."

As opposed to Janet Reno who would have simply burned the theater to the ground.

"Chechen terrorists were squarely to blame for the hostage horror in Moscow, declining to criticize Russia's tough tactics in ending the siege. "

Yes, they were and we must not lose sight of that fact.

Ari Fleischer was right. All the hostages would be dead if it were up to the terrorist, the Chechen terrorists are the monsters. Putin's the hero. It's that easy.

Instead, he fingered the Chechen terrorists.

Probably not after the children were released -- she would have lost interest.

The rebel leader's body was shown strewn on the floor littered with ammunition and rubbish, a bottle of cognac from the theatre's bar planted neatly in his hand. Russian media claimed he was an drunkard, like all his family. His men were high on drugs and women smelled of alcohol, a hostage told journalists.

If I got in a shootout with police, and the police accidently kill innocent people while trying to subdue me, their blood would be on my hands. I see no difference in this case. All of the responsibility lies squarely on the heads of the hostage takers.

Ugh...

Dude, grow up.

Do you not comprehend politics? What the President gonna do to a country as completely embarrassed at losing the Cold War, the Kursk, their equipment gets throttled in Iraq...

What is he gonna do?

Say "Well, my people tell me this is one big Charlie Foxtrot"

???

You my friend have attached your personal identity to an idea fix.

Let it go. They screwed the pooch.

Jerusalem lost the cold war?  That's a new one.
The praise coming from Israeli counterterrorism
speaks volumes.   But don't let that get in the way
of your expert opinion.

What makes them so sure the cognac was planted ? The place was in chaos, I doubt anyone was that observant in the midst of the crisis. Isn't this same "rebel leader" terrorist reputed to be more of a mercenary rather than a true believer ?

Who is them? It was one hostage's recollection over that of another. As for him being a mercenary? He gets paid to die? Mercs fight for pay, not to die.

I can see the add in Soldier of Fortune magazine now:

(Wanted - Mercenaries, payment guaranteed by Allah in heaven upon successful completion of mission. No experience required, learn while you work.)

You think this terrorist or mercenary thought he was going to die ? Get real. He meant for others to die.

FWIW, I find the Russian operation to have been an astounding success with an amazingly high number of people saved. Even if the gas had killed half the hostages the outcome is better than the alternative. All hostage deaths are the direct responsibility of the terrorists.

Hopefully, if the same situation ever exists in the US our leadership will have the stones to do the same.
