Stunned by Sen. Paul Wellstone's death, shaken state Democrats tried to decide who might replace him in a race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer said the law allows the party to nominate a new candidate to run in Wellstone's spot. She declined to address other details, including how absentee ballots already filled out would be handled.

I'm betting Mondale if he thinks he can win.

This is disgusting. The Wellstone family's bodies haven't even been buried yet and the Dems are already fighting over his spot like a pack of feral dogs.

"This turn of events is unfortunate. We must accelerate our plans.... Good. I have the Senate bogged down in procedures. By the time this incident comes up for a vote, they will have no choice but to accept your control of the system..... It is too late for them to stop us now. Everything is going as planned. The Senate will soon be in my control.....

Oh geeze ... defy the laws of physcis and die for it ... accrue too much ice on an airfoil and lose vital lift - it's as SIMPLE as that ... Conspiracy my ***!

But twice in two straight elections when the Senate hangs in the balance? They know how to do it, look at Ron Brown. I'm not saying it was done, but I think there is a possibility.

Do you seriously Ron Brown think that the Democrats Ron Brown would stoop to sacrificing Ron brown a man like Wellstone Ron Brown just to replace his successor on the ballot Walter Mondale after an election victory?

Who in the Democratic Party would order Slick & Hitlery such a thing?

"The AG is WRONG...if Ventura appointed someone to fill Wellstone's term, it would be until January, not the election day - the term ends in January"

I heard some talking head on TV say that state law requires that the winner of the election in a situation like this would be immediately sworn in and take the Senate seat.

A statewide poll of 1,000 likely voters last week gave Wellstone a slight lead, 47 percent to 41 percent, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 points.

This of course is from the unbiased Star and Sickle. I don't buy it, however it's a new ballgame now anyway.

Prayers to Paul and his family.

The Dems finally come up with a plan less controversial than the Torch episode.

I checked Sen. Paul Wellstone's voting record for this session of the senate and found it to be a carbon copy of Ted Kennedy's voting record.

No tears from this conservative.

Wellstone's name will have a magic marker drawn through it on the ballots.

Won't work - I've been to Minnesota, and can attest that magic markers freeze into an unworkable state the day after July 4...

The two men collectively raised more than $19 million.

Just out of curiousity, what happens to Wellstone's campaign fund? Think it'll be spent supporting whoever is the Democratic candidate?

NOBODY will replace Wellstone on the ballot for the Rats. The Rats can claim it's too late (as far as the absentee ballots), but the real reason is that no LIVING Rat candidate will be able to pull as many sympathy votes as the dead guy (Carnahan redux).

It won't work.. MN does not have a rat governor. Last time the Rat governor promised to name the wife to replace dead guy. If Wellstone won, then Ventura would name someone from his party to fill the spot..but not a rat.

Check out the stock market's reaction. News of Wellstone's demise arrived at about 2:00 PM eastern time. I guess the market thought the chance of a Republican takeover increased with his death.

When Wellstone was campaigning in 1990, he said something like this: "Send me to the Senate and I will go up there and kick Jesse Helms in the ass." Did he ever learn to get along with Jesse. All the people on TV this afternoon kept saying how likeable Wellstone was. Did you see EMK and Walter Frederick Mondale coming to "praise" him, not to "bury" him?

Jesse Ventura will NOT surprise anyone. If he names an interim senator for a lame-duck session, you can be sure it will be a liberal Democrat. That's what Jesse is: a liberal Democrat who says outrageous things to get attention.
