Stunned by Sen. Paul Wellstone's death, shaken state Democrats tried to decide who might replace him in a race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer said the law allows the party to nominate a new candidate to run in Wellstone's spot. She declined to address other details, including how absentee ballots already filled out would be handled.

Just bounced over to the democraticunderground, and those sorry puppies are thinking that it is the Freepers that are killing the democrats,,, lol ,,, What a wonderful world it could be...

Wellstone died, he died a horrible death, and then the intrigue will begin on the political side. But the conspicicy theories are way too rampant. IMHO

Now all we need to do is have Jesse correct seat that the Georgia governor gave to the democrats when Coverdale died... Then Carnahan loses, we have 2 seats so Chaffee is nuetralized, and we can get ourselves some judges confirmed...

.later.

Thank you for being a voice of reason in a sea of blind madness. People can hate the guy's, and his party's politics, but this conspiracy nonsense is ridiculous.

Grow up, people. One of the last decent politicians died today.

Well, DU has links over there to these FR threads already.

Looks like the Democrats will have to scramble for someone with instant name identification, somebody with a sterling reputation throughout the state, somebody the Democrats already have by the short hairs...

DUers, say hello to your next senator from Minnesota!

I was about to ask if Michael Rivero and his gang have come up with a conspiracy theory to explain it all yet.

Wellstone produced and directed the Apollo moon landing films and was secretely commanding the US Navy attack on the Kursk. He was getting ready to spill the beans.

How's that for Mikey Rivo start. ;)

Here's Minnesota law: "Subd. 12. Succession by regularly elected senator. An individual who is elected to the office of United States senator for a regular six-year term when the office is vacant or is filled by an individual appointed pursuant to subdivision 11, shall also succeed to the office for the remainder of the unexpired term."

No matter if it's a general election or a special election, it is clear that whoever is elected will fill out the rest of this term. Ventura won't be appointing anyone to this seat unless he does it before the election.

That's so clear it's worth a link: 204d.28 United States senate vacancy; manner of filling.

um you have been signed up for a few days and you use the Dems favorite words "mean-spirited" .. maybe before asting stones you should consider how jaded some conservatives are after seeing Democrats milk tragedy after tragedy for political gain.

Go back and read how they kept Patsy Mink on life support until after a deadline passed, then pulled the plug, all the while lying about her actual health staqtus during september. you might then reconsider which side is being "mean-spirited". imho the party of legal fetus-killing-for-convenience is the party that is mean-spirited.

O ne of the last decent politicians died today. Gack! we can acknowledge the tragedy of a human loss without making paeans to Leftwing partisan politics! most politicians are sincere and wellmeaning. wellstone was sincere. most politicians are decent family people. so this comment is way off base.

But it took a wellstone to vote against practically anything GOOD in the last decade, from Iraq to tax cuts to welfare reform to judges, wellstone was there fighting for the most left-wing causes possible and undermining our country. Not "decent politician", not compared to say a Coverdell or a host of retiring senators like Helms, Gramm, or Smith.

But the State Supreme court could reinterpret the law! That is what we have seen elsewhere!

"[Minnesota] State law requires that ...."

I used to have more faith in state laws. But after what the Florida Supremes did 2 years ago, and then the NJ Supremes did 2 weeks ago, I have no confidence at all that the Minnesota Supremes will feel the slightest bit obligated to rule in favor of their own State Law.

I can hear it now .... "Minnesota voters deserve a CHOICE! And that trumps anything that state laws might say! Paul would want it this way!"

Exactly! Laws are made to be interpreted, especially in a liberal state like Minnesota.

What do you mean he can't serve if he is dead? I would have thought it to be a distinct advantage in some ways.

Well, at least for approximately 50% of registered voters it is.   =;^)

If it good enough for them, it should be good enough for us.

Yeah, but we need Senators who will actually be able to show up to vote.
