WASHINGTON -- Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, one of the last unapologetic liberals left in Congress and known among his friends as a ``pied piper of modern politics,'' died Friday in a Minnesota plane crash. He was 58.

Wellstone's wife, Sheila Ison Wellstone, and daughter Marcia also died in the crash. Three campaign staff members and two pilots also perished.

That's because they are determined to get all the mileagle out of this they can get so their replacement gets the sympathy vote. Sadly,I have no doubt this will work. If Wellstone hadn't died,there was a excellent chance he would have been beaten. This is also a death blow for the campaign of his opponet. He might as well go ahead and concede now.

Like everyone, my prayers go out to Sen. Wellstone's family, friends, and staff. This is a great loss for them, and that transcends politics.

I disagreed with Senator Wellstone on just about every issue, but he was a liberal who really believed in what he was doing and stood for his principles and fought for them. I'd like to see more people like this on both sides.

I dont think so. Norm Coleman is well liked in this state and they (Wellstone and Coleman) were relatively respectful of each other.

Jesse "the body" Ventura is the Gov. He can appoint whomever he chooses to fill out the unexpired term. The Dems can place any name they deem fit on the ballot. IMHO Jesse is the biggest power broker on two feet right now.

Decidedly blunt, but historically true! A martyr makes a excellent candidate.

I'll not be critical of him on the day of his death, nor will I boo hoo or sing his praises. I wanted him out of the Senate, not dead.

The fact is that people will think that a fitting memorial will be to carry on his good works. That will be that.
