October 25, 2002 -- A Kentucky trucker who may have helped stop one of the bloodiest crime sprees in U.S. history says he just did what he had to do.

Ron Lantz told reporters he spotted the Chevy Caprice driven by the two suspected snipers, called the cops and then blocked a Maryland rest-stop exit with his truck.

How does blocking the exit at a rest stop prevent the muslim terrorists from fleeing?

My thoughts exactly. I think the trucker and the police did what they thought was right. And it did turn out ok, but...

what if Muhammed or Malvo woke up and saw a truck parked crossways on the exit? They could have immediately became suspicious.
I think it would have been better to just observe the caprice until the authorities arrived.

And yes I think the trucker deserves the $500,000.

Considering the profiling system used by the networks & political side of law enforcement, I'm surprised the trucker wasn't wrestled to the ground and cuffed while Mr Muhammad and boyfriend received an apology for being awakened and a warm cup of coffee.

Could it have really taken the police 15 - 20 minutes to get there? That's frightening.

They were busy memorizing their profile, handcuffing white-van owners, making sure no one was hunting grouse or quail and contemplating the effects of donut glaze on the slide mechanism of Glock pistols.

Ron Lantz lives in Ludlow KY - about a 15-minute drive from me. I'm honored to live in the same county as him.

I've been so busy at work, I haven't freeped since the arrest was made, and I have yet to see the news on TV. I have however, listened to the local radio stations interviewing him extensively. His whole story is truly amazing. He said that he's not a hero - he "just did what was right." He also said that just a few days prior to the arrest, he and some other Christian truckers held a prayer service about 20 miles down the road to ask God that the sniper would soon be caught. Mr. Lantz is 62 years old, and is retiring in about two more weeks. He plans on moving to Florida in the winter, and staying here in the summer.

I haven't seen a picture of the guy yet, but to after hearing him talk on the radio, he seems to be a regular good 'ol boy from Kentucky. He's got the trademark southern accent, too. As the article's title implies, he seems very humble, and only looks forward to making his last five more runs back to Delaware so he can retire.

Is he getting any national coverage? The locals were saying that "at least five different networks" have interviewed him. The story first broke when he called a local talk show and claimed to have made the 911 call. The station called his employer and started to check out his story. As the day progressed, he became more credible. CNN eventually called his house. Ron wasn't home yet, and apparently his wife didn't know what was going on, so she hung up on them! If anyone deserves the reward money, these people do!
