I hear you. I am 34 and a politics/history/infojunike. I had heard of the Zebra murders maybe 4 years ago from a close friend in his mid 40s (now in his late 40s). I had never heard of this before, though I am an east coaster, far from SF. My friend schooled me on this crimewave one night at dinner - we used to work together, worked late, and share interest in politics/trends/etc.
Actually we would matter of factly speak of impending terror attacks in nyc, well before 9-11, though most disregarded us as conspiracy nuts and fringe people. Well, maybe our discussions on Area 51 prejudiced them a bit! :-)
Regardless, on 9-12-2001, they quieted down a bit.

I grew up on Long Island during the 60s and 70s, and I don't remember hearing a thing about the Zebra killings.
There is often a thin line between prescience and paranoia.
