What holds Canada back? This thread inspired me to go look up some numbers, and I found about what I expected to find: compared to a U.S. state of the same size, Canada's economic performance is about half. Accoording to this place, Canada's population is about 30 million, and its GNP is $570 billion. California's population is a little larger at 33 million, but its output is double: about $1.3 trillion.

Why?

Well, there is the climate, for one thing. Compare the Canadian economy with our northern tier of states, including Alaska, rather than California. See if the per capita GNP isn't more similar for regions with similar climate and populations.
