Who knows but my guess is that they are two goof-balls with strange ideas and teens can be easily led. The kid may just have needed a father figure.

I have seen before kids going whacko when gayness is thrown in -- as in the case of John Walker Lindh where the kid's father comes out as gay -- and that traumtizes the teenager.
