When Linux is outlawed only outlaws will . . .
They'll have to pry my fingers from my keyboard . . .

Bought out by media business interests, I presume.
That monopoly power was the idea the dems had on election reform too - limit the ability to broadcast info before elections.

Gee, I would HOPE that ANYTHING coming from TAXPAYER-FUNDED research would be free like this. They don't want to share the milk coming from the public teat.

You know, sometimes Democrats are right!

I'm hoping that some Repubs can stop this.

I'd vote for this as the most misleading headline of the week. Apparently, this bill only seeks to prevent govt-funded R&D and software from being released under a restrictive license.
If people want to produce software which has a GNU license, then by all means they should do it. But they should do it on their own nickel... not the taxpayers.
The most successful govt-funded software R&D projects have always released their code without restrictions. e.g. LINPACK/LAPACK.

Microsoft is Smith's top source of donations. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Microsoft employees and its political action committee have given $22,900 to Smith's re-election campaign. An obvious MS lackey.
Microsoft, whose Windows operating system competes with Linux, says open-source hurts a company's right to protect its intellectual property
Total BS!

When Linux is outlawed only outlaws will . . . ...buy a Mac. Under that pretty face is a full BSD Unix.

Rep. Adam Smith You can't make stuff like this up. Presumably, the irony is lost on the congressman...

Even though linux sucks beyond all imagination for anything but serving up data, this is beyond the pale even for Dems.

The GNU license is restrictive. If you use a GNU component in your program, it requires not just that you publish your own code, but anyone modifying your system must also publish their code ab infinitum. You could argue that open source is better than closed source, but you can not argue that the GNU license is "less restrictive" than say BSD or MIT's X11 license.

sales opportunities for government-funded software projects. The government has no business being in business. With unlimited revenues to support their projects, the free market could not compete.

How dare the RATS attack free software. Capitalist Pigs !!

Democrats Seek to Outlaw Linux ...while they cry that the Repubs are the only ones that are about big business. Well, look who just cosied-up to the wealthiest man in the world and declared him worthy of a monopoly!

No...When Linux is outlawed ...Will U be NIX

So, someone expects "the gov't" to construct software on any platform that people would actually find valuable and want? Or even maybe buy? Yea, that will happen. About the same time they have the borders secure and Social Security is in Tai Stick Al Gores lock box.
They should just use the same model used for CLIPS and just give away anything "valuable" that the gov't produces.

Should have split the monopoly up. I always supported it and I still do. They're tyrannical in a business sense and wield way too much capital. They're dangerous.
