President Bush unveiled a new initiative Tuesday [Oct 31, 2001] at Thomas S. Wootton High School to pair the nation's veterans with individual schools.
"You need to listen to what they have to say," Bush said during an assembly at the Rockville school. "America should always honor our veterans; at this moment, especially."
In making his announcement, Bush, speaking before students, staff and an assemblage of local, state and national dignitaries including Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jerry D. Weast, U.S. Rep. Constance A. Morella (R-Dist. 8) of Bethesda, former U.S. Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) -- himself a wounded World War ll veteran -- said he was asking Americans to extend traditional Veterans' Day observances on Nov. 11 from one day to one week.
The President's new initiative came amid reports of heightened possibilities of new terrorist attacks in the United States and that U.S. troops are on the ground in Afghanistan. Despite the heightened anxiety, the atmosphere at Wootton was one of excitement as the school prepared for the President's arrival
