I think we should have "high tea" this afternoon....
Hosting a high tea is an innovative fun way to get friends together for an afternoon of relaxation and delicious food. It is not even necessary to serve tea, if that's not your (tea) bag. The "high" referred to the way it was taken, sitting atop stools in a tea shop or standing at the counter or buffet table. The high tea idea began around the mid 1700's as a way to ward off the hunger pangs before dinner. They traditionally used leftover meats and made sandwiches. It is said that this idea was from the Earl of Sandwich. High tea time was a cross between afternoon tea and supper, and for many it was the main meal of the day. High tea originated as a British working class tradition.
That sounds wonderful!
One of my most memorable experiences was having high tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC. So elegant and sooooo very British. Whenever we go to Victoria, high tea is always on our list of things to do.
