They don't teach geography in the public schools anymore. They teach "social studies" where students learn how everybody everywhere is really the same deep down (except white westerners, who are evil). Seriously, I remember reading an article a few years ago bemoaning the map-reading/making curriculum of a late-elementary school class. It consisted of making a map of the inside of the kid's home, and looking at the maps the other kids made of the insides of their homes. Little wonder nobody knows what's where anymore.

My 8-year old homeschooled son burst out in a fit of laughter when he heard that one! He knows all the states, their locations, their capitols, major cities and geologic/historic attributes,etc.

I told him to be humble...
