Actually, the origin of the rock is not in question. Several meteorites from mars have been identified
(from chemical and isotope concentrations).

Similarities between this meteorite fragment and remote Martian minerology sampling that doesn't match terrestrial examples.
Tantalizing. But the only way to really tell is to be able to return some samples directly from Mars. There are a lot of water-lain sediments there. It would be a geologist's, if not a biologist's dream.
