[history]
A 9-year-old boy who was practicing with his youth football team was shot in the hip this evening by someone who fired from a wooded area at McKinley Park in Beltzhoover.
Officials said the boy sustained an abrasion wound to his left hip. He was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland, where he was in fair condition, said hospital spokesman Dean Walters.

Sounds more like some kid was messing around in the woods, maybe target practicing and one of the kids got winged. That was my first thought as well, or some boob was hunting where he wasn't supposed to.
To: LasVegasMac
My take was that the kid got grazed by the bullet, hence the "abrasion" instead of the hole.

Lets hope the message about the children wasn't the call for the sleeper cells to open.

Distance would be important, too. How far away would the shooter be?
The original shooter said no child would be safe. There's reason to suspect, but my first guess right now would be copy cat.
Either way, this sucks.

Huh?
What kind of gun causes an "abrasion" instead of a hole?
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the kid was not hurt (abrased?) too bad.
Something smells.

Likely a careless jerk popping off a few rounds without knowing what is beyond his target. Hope they catch 'em.

Hunters? Is it hunting season in Pennsylvania?

I hope this is not the beginning of rampant snipers all over the place, either al quaeda or "normal" psychos. Have you ever heard of the Black Dahlia murder? This took place in Los Angeles in December 1946....A truly hideous torture/murder. The case remains unsolved to this day, and no less than 2 dozen KNOWN copycat crimes were commited in "homage" to it 1947-1950. And this was before we had a truly instant mass media, before TV really took off and before the net, before the culture's fascination with psycho killers became so ubiquitous, when there seems to have been more psychological barriers to acting out sadistic fantasies than has been the case post 1970.
I expect many copycats. I hope they and their 'inspiration' are captured quickly.

Kim- see the above story
I just finished coaching a pee-wee football team last week. As we went to our last game Saturday morning, I looked at the dense trees on the far side of the park and thought about the sniper. I do not live anywhere near the shootings (Sioux Falls, SD) but the thought crossed my mind none-the-less. If these incidents start occuring more regularly and with more accuracy, the whole country would be in lockdown pretty darn quick. A couple loonies from several different cities could really wreak some damage.

I am confused as well. The Moose message from earlier could have coded this to start the shooting for another cell member? Although I am tin-foiling it right now...let me say that I find it odd that we get a message about our kids not being safe anywhere or anytime and then this happens. Whacked.

Nevermind, just googled it and found it. Her name was Elizabeth Short.(interesting) Anyway, the 1947 murder was not solved.

There are hip pads in the football pants. There are snaps holding the pads in place. Perhaps the bullet deflected? I don't know a lot about guns, but I would think the hard plastic or the snap could at least re-direct a small enough caliber bullet. Just an idea.

Copycat -- or the B team is in place and has been activated. I am not going to comment further until I hear more.
