Rather than argue whether it isn't al Qaeda, let me ask you this: If it IS al Qaeda, why is it only happening in the one area? If I were part of a terrorist group, I'd want the maximum impact of having this same panic going on in many cities, like LA, Miami, Chicago, NYC, Detroit, etc.
IMHO, it's another Son of Sam, slightly different modus operandi. Some of you will remember how long it took to catch him, and it also took a major break in the case, if I recall correctly.

why is it only happening in the one areaPerhaps to test whether money could be raised. There was a story about the al jezra interviews, indicating the quaedas wanted a million dollars for the interview -- they are having trouble raising money.
How would asupposedly "brilliant" American expect to collect the money? It would take at least a small group to cash out a funds transfer and get away. No single individual could pull it off. The money angle makes no sense unless several people are involved, some in a foreign country.
