If they are day laborers, they would be using the phone to call in to the agency or their employer to see if there was work for them that day, or to find out what location to go to.

Calling home (Mex. or Guat) every day would be a luxury for these guys.

VERY GOOD POINT. Which is exactly why I started this thread.Although my point about calling family with phone cards to their country is 100% accurate most day labor work do check in before hand or check in with people they might pick up for the ride to the work place.Bottom line is wrong place at the wrong time but that phone booth was being watched by the law.
