Put volunteers(armed) on the outside of the school when kids are coming and going. This may help.

OK, I'm no counter-insurgency expert but I have a little tip for the tactically challenged. EXTEND THE PERIMETER Guards at entrances are nothing but targets. Patrol any woods. Keep vehicles away. It is not that difficult.

First and foremost all woods should be watched. Limit access to only school parents' vehicles in certain areas. I like the idea presented of circling busses around the transfer areas to protect children. Etc.
