"They don't need to tell us they paid him off. Anyway, as I mentioned previously, it will buy time."

And then what?? Just keep paying them off as 5 more or 10 more show up??

NBC reporting that Sniper says in note he wants 10 million dollars.

Interesting ---a lone nutcase gunman would know they'd never get to use that kind of money I would think. There is a motive too then, not just hate of a mixed variety of people.

Yes, this is a horrible set of circumstances to be sure ... but laughter is a wonderful way of releasing the tension and that's what this is here. Sometimes we all need to lighten up a little bit.

"now you'd be lucky to find 50% of college students who would fight for our country."

That question has come up with my non-college friends, and the sentiment is why go through the trouble of fighting and possibly dying for liberty and freedom, when as soon as you (or your remains) come home, those who you fought for, will continue to vote for those who hate liberty and freedom.

It makes it even harder when welfare deadbeats, environmentalist wackos, members of the Hate America First cabal, illegal aliens, H1 visa types who are here just to take your high tech job, and politicians whose only familiarity with the USC is while in the bathroom, are those who will take the freedoms protected to advance causes that quickly dispose of other freedoms and would never think about defending that which they ingratefully take.

FYI the F.B.I. is not in charge. If they were Moose would not be leading the press conferences. F.B.I., A.T.F., D.O.D. are only "assisting" the locals. That is why I say the Moose looks like he is staring at headlights in those press conferences. I thought he was going to break down and cry today.

"Too many locals for proper co-ordination. This has got to have a central war room to be handled properly."

This dude is an urban sniper. Most neighborhoods are nicely divided subdivisions. Many have HOAs and others are members of Crime Watch, which is a neighborhood by neighborhood organization. Each neighborhood can act as a "cell" that communicates to its immediate neighboring "cells" to indicate who and by what description the current watch is made up of.

Many neighborhoods are limited access and over time patterns and personal recognition will make things grow progressively smoother. As a side benefit, overall crime ~will~ decrease. The shooter has been firing, not into residential neighborhoods, but at businesses with open areas where sufficient time is available to choose a target, sight in the target, pull off a shot, and evacuate the area without being seen.

If some people would turn off their damned television sets, quit cruising the net for porn, and take a night off from bowling, they could use that surplus time to discuss with their neighbors and local businesses what areas seem to be the most vulnerable, and make those areas priority.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if some men of action aren't already beyond the "talking about it stage".

There is no particular need to coordinate things with government, since first government hates the idea that the population might be better off without them, and second, the government doesn't trust its citizens. It is only when a person collects a government employment check is that person automatically transformed into a completely trustworthy and responsibile person. Third, since government is the problem, and since there is invariably someone who is willing to leak information out (since their only interest in this situation is financial/ego), then centralizing the information will most certainly break down as government will demand rigidity, inflexibility, committee based assignments and regulation, will make demands on certifications, training, background checks - all the red tape that government specializes in.

It is sufficient to tell a patrolman who passes by, "I am here to watch the neighborhood - I have a bolt action 300 win mag, nightscope, a cell phone and a burning hatred for these perps. If you hear a loud gunshot - it will be mine, and the party on the other end are those who you are seeking. Have a nice evening, sir - here is a donut."

Dang good advice, and the nice thing about it is that this is done without imposing martial law on true Americans. The only problem I see with this is that the seditionist appeasniks that fill our government and schools will loudly complain and demonstrate against a renewed interest in patriotism, virtue and duty.

Actually no. You asserted that burglaries are easy to solve. That may be, but it is also true that solution rates for property crime are much lower than they are for serious violent crime, and that reporting rates for proprty crime are about 20%. That means that for every property crime committed, the chances of getting arrested are probably well under 10%, and, as the conviction statistics you provided show, if you are not a career criminal, you are almost certain to get away with it. So, if burglaries are easy to solve, it must be sloth and incompetence that account for them not being solved, right?

What's the point? Despite the fact the COST of policing is waaaay up, and we have doofuses like Herr Professor Doktor Moose with credentials out the kazoo, the EFFECTIVENESS of policing just plain SUCKS. And people are DEAD because it SUCKS. We pay for hideous amounts of overtime so police can put on a show for the public in the sniper case, and reimburse the brass for worthless postgraduate degrees, and what do we get for it? A DECLINING murder solution rate.

So tell me again, what's your reason for "trusting" the police in this case?

Good point. I wonder if such requirements are to "eurocentric" for an Urban Studies degree.

"There would be total chaos if LE asked private citizens to form into lynch mobs..."

As opposed to what is happening now. (sigh)

I guess cowering behind the washing machine rather than dealing with the problem and hoping some government offical
saves you is the preferred way to live.

geeze, next thing we will be turning on the Bat signal.

I got news for you. The communication we heard from Chief Moose this evening is most recent installment of the ongoing "deak" being thrown at the sniper(s) to try and anger them and elicit a response. Grabbing money isn't a goal here. Maybe breaking down a local economy as a part of a larger plot, but not something as cheap as money. My feeling is these people haven't said the right things to the cops and this is a classic "we've got to do something" act of desperation on the part of LE (law enforcement).

This "coming for the kids" thing is all Al Qaeda. They are probably calling for the release of the people we have. I believe they somehow communicated this. And we probably aren't playing ball. Everything else cryptically alluding to money and the like; all a ploy by the Feds to anger and perhaps cause the perps to surface for a true response.

I believe our Gov't wants the enemy to make their move and reveal themselves through the normal media channels. They obviously do not see the need.

When Bush Sr. said GWB had the most important job since Lincoln he was alluding to the fact we could see a truly epic battle to close our borders and kick out a lot of people living here illegally. Because he probably feels ethnic "arguments" are going to occur otherwise. I do not want to live in a country where certain people are targeted for mindless slaughter in order to divide the survivors. All of this is very very intriguing and profoundly sad. Incredible times.

"Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday he did not foresee the FBI taking over the sniper investigation, but he did not rule out the possibility."

Considering how the FBI conducts its business today (re: 900+ Files in the White House, Waco, Ruby Ridge, OKC, Richard Jewel, Eric Rudolph, TWA 800, etc.) All we are guarenteed is that there will be a coverup if anything embarassing to the almighty fedgov were to be discovered.

The FBI now specializes in self-promotion, empire building, CYA, corruption of evidence, corruption of witnesses, corruption of prosecution, ...

The FBI is not the public's friend anymore. It is a tool used by politicians for the means and ends of politicians.

Oh and the Republicans are going to control both Houses after the second Tuesday in November. That's the weirdest part of all this, the timing. Seems counterproductive for the enemy to have to face a conservative and somewhat united political base. That's the part of this that is rather curious. I guess some could say the Administration forced the issue with the Iraq vote and Fleischer comment. Hussein, Al Qaeda, Indonesia, Phillipines, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Korea, what a shn!t soup this is turning into.

"...Even the murder solution in some big cities is frighteningly low..."

The current stats for urban areas are a 6 out of 7 chance that a random killing will result in no prosecution.

9-1-1 is no substitute for a .45

Perhaps that memory of some good ol' FBI comes from the wonderful PR, movies, TV shows, etc.

"That thinking/employment of basic defense is what will wax this guy. I'd volunteer in a heart beat."

Just word out on the street that many trigger happy civilians are on the watch all over, and are drooling over the chance to bag the trophy terrorist should be sufficient to cause the perp to think twice.

When the hunter becomes the hunted - by those who don't care to play with politically correct rules of engagement like the LEOs are unfortunately tied down with.
