So much for the notion, put forth in The New Republic, that "race has never mattered less" as an issue in American politics.
In recent days, singer Harry Belafonte has received substantial attention for his view that Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice are nothing more than "house slaves" for a Republican master. Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the Democratic candidate for governor of Maryland, has equated those who oppose racial quotas to members of a Southern lynch mob. And now Michigan Democrats are accusing the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, of "doing a Willie Horton" because he has dared to call out his Democratic opponent, Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, on her support for reparations for descendants of slaves.

Democrats and Republicans are different.The Democratic Party is the party of the rich and famous, positioning itself as the party of "the little guy." The Democratic Party has, accordingly, few donors--but a large average donation.
The Republican Party is the party of the middle class. It has a smaller average donation size than the Democrats, but enough more donors to glean a greater total donation.
This is reflected in the Red/Blue map, which clearly shows Democratic predominance only in the cities and the toney affluent suburbs. The Democratic Party is the affluent politically using the poor against the middle class. It is snobbery.
