"What I'm really asking for is that we take the next phase of the Bush tax cuts that haven't gone into effect yet," said Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., "and take those tax cuts, which will effect the top two percent of the country, and recycle them; redirect them and bring them forward into business tax cuts."

Oh, Joe just wants to repeal the rest of the Bush tax cuts and replace them with something else more to his liking. That makes more sense. I don't see any new tax cuts here.

I take your point, but if Lieberman is serious about swapping complete and permanent elimination of capital gains taxes for the outstanding balance of Bush's income tax rate reductions, I'd take him up on it in a heartbeat. I'll bet most folks in the top 2% would too.

Until such time as we get the NRST or a flat tax, individual income tax rates will seesaw up and down depending on the political winds. We may get them down for a few years but the Dems will raise them again at the first opportunity. But elimination of capital gains taxes would be a HUGE structural change which -- given the growth of the investor class, and being good policy as well -- would probably be permanent.

If Joe can line up half a dozen Democrat cosponsors, I'd make this a top priority in January.

Ah, but he said he wants to pull in the outyears personal tax cuts, and apply them elsewhere, now. That is a plus.

And I didnt read anything about making these replacement tax cuts effective earlier. To me just sounds like a way to make it appear that he's recommending something while eliminating the tax cuts already passed. Wouldnt be surprised when its over, there is money left for the Dems to spend, spend, spend.

I am amazed that some people have fallen for this spin. This man doesn't want tax cuts. He wants to repeal the tiny cuts which have been made and stop the rest which are scheduled to take place. He then wants to redistribute wealth from Republicans to Democrats. How people could fall for this is the main question. It shows that most people hear what they want to hear, and THAT is the problem.

And then there was the piece where he was chirping about "we couldn't 'afford' last years tax cut", yet in the same breath was calling for acceleration of the remainder of the program.

Whatever. Bush should come out and hold Lieberman's feet to the fire on this by saying "Let's Roll, big guy... Good to have you on board".

Also -- prepare yourselves that if the Pubs do well in this election the Demons will make a significant right turn. It won't make them 'not' liberals, but maybe it will shut up (and get rid of) some of the most notorious communists (Daschle) and criminals (McAuliffe).
