Maybe the French authorities won't release the sketch out of some privacy concern.

My guess is that the US authorities don't want it released. If the cell finds out that we have a sketch that is close, they will kill the guy to prevent his arrest.

Also, if it does turn out to be a lone nut (highly unlikely, IMO), he might go ballistic and do something much worse--like leave the area and walk into some place and kill 50 or so before the cops could get there.
