This would amount to a national data base of gun owners. Every gun registration scheme has, within 10 yrs ended up as a confiscation list. Ask long term NYC residents. Ask WWII era Germans. Ask pre-Casto Cubans.

My thought, too. Ballistic fingerprinting is step #1 towards firearms registration.

Soon, the gun grabbers will squeal, "Well, what good is it for the police to know which weapon the bullet came from if they don't have an up-to-date record of who owns the weapon?

The ATF, etc. could probably get around any laws prohibiting gun registration by requiring firearms dealers to hold onto the records. I've heard, but cannot confirm, that in the DC metro area, the FBI, in their search for the "sniper", are using records obtained from gun dealers. FReepers, who own the type of weapon(s) that could be the weapon used by the shooter, have mentioned receiving phone calls from the FBI in regards to their firearms.
