Every GSW I've done (too many)- we work with LEO to ascertain the trajectory, because- along with the position of the victim- it leads right back to where the shot came from.
They'd piece the clothing together after we'd cut it off, and run a straight edge from entrance to exit. X-rays often show the path as well.
It has also occured to me that moving victims are gut shot- stationary ones head shot- so he/they may not be that good a marksman.

That the torso shots were just harder for some reason or another. The shooter is so UNPICKY about victims, it about making the shot and escaping for him. He may be on a time clock - if he doesn't get an easy head shot within, say, 15 minutes, he takes the next available shot. He's very disciplined.
He gets off on the hysteria that follows. That's what he's about.
