Do you honestly believe anything close to that could happen in this country, or is it something you all just say to make it sound as extreme as it can be?

I say it to illustrate a point. If you prefer a more likely scenario, it would be your right to self defense that the government abrogates, a la the socilaists and communists. That has already happened in many countries so it escapes the "extreme" clause.
