Isn't there a type of light that can be shined on an area to determine if there is gun powder residue present? If so, can't the police simply shine this light into vehicles and on the hands of drivers?

If so, can't the police simply shine this light into vehicles and on the hands of drivers? I don't know rintense, but I think there's something they must be able to do....I heard them saying they're "smelling" for gun powder on people in the cars.
