I somehow just cannot imagine if this were happening in George Washington's time or Patrick Henry's time, that, when learning that someone had been shot by an enemy (most likely) he would say, "Well don't ask my help! I have my rights you know!"

I have my rights you know!" Their response would have been "How can I help? Martha, get me my gun!" Yeah, and the minute Washington (in today's world) stepped out of his house with his rifle to "help", armed SWAT teams would either put him down or arrest him, and he'd get 20 years in jail.
