What I don't understand is if the shooting occurred nearly 3 hours ago, don't you think the suspect/s would be long gone by now - out of range of their localized searches???

That's why they have roadblocks in Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland. I have not heard, although I imagine, they have roadblocks down to the North Carolina border.
