I decided to obey their proposed laws and rent an electric car. It cost about the same as a Taurus, and barely got me to the Capitol and back before running out of power. (The Capitol is about 9 miles from the airport). I hope that if the legislature eventually requires 10% of all cars sold to be electric, they force themselves to drive only electric cars. That won't last long, trust me.

That cute little green car was a FReeper rental? I understand that GM cancelled their lease program-- infuriating many satisfied electric vehicle enthusiasts. For a mere $38,000, e-vz are a little out of my price range, but rich demoRAT and envirowackos now have a place to put their money where their mouth is and do something about all this bad CA air. /sarcasm

I believe the problem with the lease program is that it included maintenance. Once the batteries died in the car, it would be prohibitively expensive to replace them, compared to the lease payments.

There are plenty of EV-1 owners who would have loved to do that despite the horrorific costs, because the car was truly great, at least for people who didn't need to travel long distances (or had a charging station at their destination).

I think it's a great pity those fascinating cars are destined for the crusher after the leases expire.
