The details on the incident haven't been reported much yet but it sounds like there was a neighborhood street celebration that Lautenberg attended to press the palms of voters; show he "cares".
Donald Forrester also showed up (I don't know if his appearance had also been announced). He showed up with 2 podiums so that they could debate (responding to Lautenberg's claim that he would debate "any time - any place"). Put him on the spot so to speak.
If the left is going to applaud Micheal Moore for doing drive by interviews of celebrities and workers, why not have a politician do a drive by debate?

any attempt to actually gain political traction out of the fact that your opponet is over-the-hill, out-of-touch and unwilling to face his opponent in a real debate by republicans is a 'desparate attempt to get back in the race'.
