For anyone who has not been involved with a voter registration drive, let me tell you how it is supposed to work.

The ones who are sponsoring the drive (party, candidate, etc.) hire outside contractors to do the actual registering at malls, etc. paying a set amount of money for each registration. The outside contractors hire whomever they can get. Oftentimes whomever they can get for this temporary work are not exactly your upstanding pillars of the community types. :-) Also, some legit partisan groups also register to get "bounty" for each new registration.

The partisan groups generally don't have much of a problem with false afidavits, but the temp workers do. When I was involved in a massive voter registration drive here in CA, we had one person whose only job was to call the new "voters" to make sure that they were legit people. (Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if they are actually citizens, but at least you can see if the phone numbers match up to real people.)

When we found that one of our workers was padding his or her new registrations, that person got fired on the spot and blacklisted from doing registrations again.

BTW, I have a question. We have Indian tribes here in CA who can run gambling operations on their reservations because they are "sovereign nations." If the Indians are citizens of these "sovereign nations," how can they vote in US elections?? Enquiring minds need to know.... It seems to me that they are trying to have the best of both worlds.

Throughout the state, there are massive voter registration drives being conducted by both political parties, tribal governments and national organizations. Nichols currently is the only person charged.

I agree both parties need to have voter registration drives. What I was trying to point out was that the way the story was written, the implication is that both voter registration drives were fraudulant but only the dems had been caught.

I don't accept this assumption that these drives are by definition fraudulant.
