Just Suppose It's Terrorism
Washington Post ^ | October 17, 2002 | Caleb Carr

The psychological profiling that has consumed the media since the start of the sniper killings has produced in almost every case a rather cliched portrait of a killer or killers who are white, in their twenties or early thirties, have military experience, enjoy exercising the godlike power of life and death, and are alienated from society. Some describe the culprit as a serial killer, and some label him a spree or thrill killer. Yet the salient aspects of the shootings do not fit with our knowledge of either of these types, and if the perpetrator does turn out to be disaffected, frustrated, alienated, white and male, he will constitute an important new subcategory. Should the killings be the work of international terrorists, on the other hand, they will fit a textbook pattern that has been on ample display during recent years in every part of the world.

This is bizarre - it's as if the entire news media is totally OBLIVIOUS to the possibility, indeed - the probability - that this is the work of middle eastern terrorists! Instead they bring on various talking heads to profile a "serial killer" - what a bunch of hooey! Witnesses said the guy was olive-skinned; the pattern fits Al Qaeda training videos; and in case the idiots at the networks forgot - WE ARE IN A WAR. Duh. I am going to turn off the idiot box and stick to talk radio. The news media and government both disgust me. The govt. is using this as an excuse to support more gun control - nevermind that the stinking govt. can't protect its citizens, it now wants citizens to be totally disarmed and helpless like fish in a bowl. I say, "out of my cold dead hands!"

Dr Kalashnikov vehemently denies that his design was copied from the German. Probably the concept of a light, portable, select-fire weapon which fired a medium-power round was copied from them, but the AK design is an original. Darn hard to improve after all these years too. If there hadn't been a Cold War, our troops would probably be carrying them right now but procurement from the Evil Empire was unthinkable at the time.

Maybe it's not, but this could be international terrorism. Those who argue that terrorists claim responsibility are myopic and forgetful.

Remember the Egyptian pilot who crashed the passenger plane muttering Islamic prayers? That was puzzling when it happened, but it is understandable now. These killers experiment and have trial runs.

The killer could be a terrorist helping to perfect technique.

Even if he is not, even if he is a lone psychotic serial killer, the successes he has had have not been lost on the terrorists who are studying us.

Bush is right. America is at war with international terrorism, though Americans do not want to be.

Bush's recognition of this horrible fact immediately after the September 11 attack was brilliant in its clarity and focus.

This war will be horrible. It has already come to American soil. The enemy is every bit as fanatical, vicious, and dangerous as Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan.

America must win this war. It will take every bit of American knowhow. Most importantly it will require clarity, focus, and resolve.

God is with us! Take courage from that.

OBL is dead - that demagogic terrorist would have appeared by now on some Al Jazeera video if he was alive.

What if this is a test case as it was suggested in a commentary on WorldNetDaily? What if this spreads to 20 other cities when we attack Iraq? Then, the inability of our hapless govt. to protect us will become quite apparent! Then, Americans will willingly submit to martial law (as if that will do any good). I hope at that point that Americans demand the rounding up of all middle eastern males between 15 and 50 - not for internment, but for deportation back to Mohamed-land where they belong. If Americans get mad enough, it will happen and it will be a good thing for our national security. To hades with diversity. I don't want to mix with a culture that is bent on world domination. I want them out.

How do you know that? How do you know that God isn't using islam to judge America for its heinous sins? It wouldn't be the first time God has judged a nation, would it? God used the evil empires of Assyria and Nebuchadnezzar to judge a wayward Israel. Why is America special? America has kicked God out of the public square, is the biggest propagator of pornography and weapons of war in the world, the biggest killer of unborn babies (next to China maybe), and the American people are mostly moral relativist. Now, there's a nation God can love, eh?

They were all non-Moslems. They were all kaffir infidels. None had olive skin. None wore the hajib. Coincidence?

More than one were Black.

I believe some 30% of Americans Muslims are black.

I agree. If I were in charge, I would be watching all the OUTGOING overseas airline flights for departing snipers. If it's Islamic terrorists, they won't take credit until they are off of American soil.

It's very weird that the profiler "experts" are all ignoring the elephant in the living room. You'd think it would be obvious when the pattern fits no known previous serial killer profile, and falls in line with terrorist patterns.

They all say the same thing like brain-dead robots that terrorist's always will claim responsibility. Yeah right, and I'm the Pope posting on Free Republic.

Black Muslims are smart enough to put those masonic badges on the back of their cars! Perfect for not getting shot while pumping gas or loading up groceries

Believe me, most of the law enforcement folks involved in the case are fully aware by now that this is most likely a cell of Middle Eastern terrorists. They're not coming out and saying so because they're terrified that guys like me will decide to go out and start shooting anyone that looks like an Arab.

The country panicked over the Anthrax attacks that killed a dozen or so people last year, and are now equally transfixed by the sniper(s) but everyone appears to be oblivious to the 164, yes 164, deaths from 3052 cases of West Nile this year.

What you say may be true but if it is they sure picked a whimpy virus to reign terror with. Thats not a very good kill ratio and it is usually only fatal to the old and the very young. How many people die of influenza each year, I would suspect its more than 164

"...media and police never once mentioned that it might be terrorism...even though every man and woman on the street said otherwise"

One of the GREAT things about the net is that the elites can no longer limit discussion about subjects which they would prefer to sweep under the rug. Fifteen years ago, we would all be just be sitting in front of the TV shouting at Dan Rather....all the while thinking that we were the only sane individual left in America. Now, we have a method of running an end-around the media/elite establishment. They cannot control the truth anymore or make us feel isolated. That is the miracle of the net.

"Its very weird that the profiler experts are all ignoring the elephant in the living room"

Political correctness is a fascinating phenomenon. It is the ultimate example of the old story about "the emperor has no clothes". Our elites slavishly ignore obvious facts and suppress heretical thoughts because they fear the social ostracism that they will experience if they leave the elite liberal reservation. The reality is: suggesting that this sniper may be a muslim is politically incorrect. It is perfectly OK to suggest that he is a racist, gun-worshipping white male redneck (that is well within acceptable bounds of discussion for our elite). But suggesting that he is a minority (and probably an immigrant, no less) is strictly forbidden. Thus, even if they hamper the effort to catch the culprit by hiding information about his appearance, the liberals must maintain total PC form and continue to suggest that it must be a new Tim McVeigh.
