SniperWatch.com is now up and running. Here is a link.
I put this site together over the weekend in an effort to assist law enforcement in the DC sniper case. It allows volunteers to monitor DC/Maryland/Va webcams and report sightings of suspected vehicles to a database. The database is available to law enforcement (only) to monitor in real-time or view retrospectively. I sent an email to the Maryland Task Force tonight to let them know about the site and I will post when I hear their response. Once I hear back from them and assuming they are interested, I also plan to contact media outlets in an effort to grow the volunteer base.
Ok, fellow freepers, what we need now is some volunteers to start monitoring the webcams and start reporting sightings. Even if you can only watch for 5 or 10 minutes, that is Ok. To be a volunteer, go to the sight and follow the instructions to create a userid and password. I have included userid and password functionality in order to maintain the integrity of the data.
I know this sounds like a long shot but there is a chance that this data could really help law enforcement in the investigation.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, you can email me using the contact link on the site or post back here. Finally, this site went up pretty quick so if you run into any bugs, please let me know.
Thanks.
lower right with ladder on top....wonder how many times hes been pulled over in the past few days
Yes, I've been thinking that a crazed militiaman might be involved. Most of those wackos have been exterminated here at FreeRepublic, but not before their actions showed they were capable of extreme behavior.
Off topic: Does anyone know what the status is of the three med students who were stopped in Florida?
I took it live Monday night. So far, there are 25 volunteers signed up to watch the cams. I have contacted several media outlets and plan on contacting several more tonight. I have heard back from a radio talk show host in Washington who is thinking about covering the site. I have sent a message to law enforcement and I am still waiting to hear back.
I checked the webstats for the page this afternoon and I was surprised to see that there have been over 16,000 hits on the site in the last 48 hours. Apparently, it is starting to get around and several webpages have put up links to it. If I can get a media outlet interested, I think we can get the volunteer count up.
Tonight I added a forum and a live chat. Given that I wrote the code for the site in one day, I will be cleaning it up over the next few days. Right now, the whole format is a work in progress.
So. That's the update. Thanks to all the Freepers who have offered their encouragement.
Yes. Last Thursday I posted that I thought he would take a road trip of 2 to 3 hours because of the heat around DC. I speculated Richmond, Wilmington or Philly. Ashland is a suburb of Richmond.
