CNN Headline News is reporting that a woman has been shot near a Home Depot in Falls Church, VA, and that authorities are investigating whether this is another sniper attack.

The thing with all those people sitting there waiting their turn, and running out of gas; is that the sniper now has a large number of stationary targets.

Yeah, but I doubt he'd do that - at least as a sniper. He obviously prefers to catch them out in the open, where a clean shot is assured, rather than inside a vehicle with windows rolled up. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I doubt it.

On the other hand, all that stalled traffic in one neat line would make a handy target for terrorism of a different sort. Blech.

Perhaps, but I believe this guy lays down in the back of a jeep or truck while he has a spotter. Maybe two teams of 2. Maryland against Virginia. But, who knows.

I love Ted Williams too! I particularly enjoy his pronunciation, took some getting used to but he's grown on me. I've taken to using his version of the word "disgruntled" which is disgrumbled. And he also says shootin' for "shooting" which seems somehow appropriate.

PRESS BRIEFING AT 1:00 AM. FAIRFAX COUNTY. FOX NEWS CHANNEL... FBI says "avoid being stationary when you're outside." "wear dark clothing - make it more difficult", "darting fashion as you move." PRESS CONFERENCE: I don't have alot of additional information. Want to update information on lookout for vehicle. Again, it is a creme color astro van with a taillight out - left taillout out. Silver ladder rack on top, that's the latest info on the van we're looking for. NO INFO ON LICENSE PLATE. NO INFO ON DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. I don't know as I said earlier, we don't know if this case is related to the other murders that have occurred in this area. Investigating it with that potential in mind. We are still interviewing witnesses to get that information. Obviously, the time it will take to have the ballistic test done.

Withholding information re: victim. Surveillance? I don't know of any surveillance. We are not releasing any information as far as who was with the victim. Not releasing at this point. Shell casings? Searching the scene currently. Searching the scene now.

We still have folks out in the area searching for this van and getting info from witnesses. Easy or difficult to get out of? There are a number of ways that you can leave the shopping center and certainly within a few short minutes, you can be in Arlington, Alexandria or a couple of interstates. This is a difficult shopping center to guess which way they left. (they?)

Paint the scene. This was close to the time when the stores were open so there were a number of folks in the parking lot in the shopping center. How brazen? I wouldn't begin to speculate. Where did they see it? At the scene.

Only information I have is the description. We're still investigating. Dispell that there's no tag number. There was witness information of folks who saw a light color van in the area after the shooting - getting several tag numbers. We don't know if it's the tag number of the vehicle.

Not talking about witness information. We have a number of witnesses that were interviewed. Olive skinned man? Unreliable information that has been put out. We are still interviewing witnesses, gathering info, hoping to give us further leads in this case. Which direction shot was fired? Still under investigation. I think every policy agency in this region has made preparation as best.... We are putting every resource in tracking down this vehicle. NEXT PRESS CONFERENCE 9:00 AM EST. Ah, if a witness can detect which vehicle a shot came from, clear across a parking lot full of cars, with acoustic factors, lights, glare, traffic noise, etc, that would be remarkable. Who knows...

I didn't say a witness detected where the shot came from. More likely, the witness sees only a random vehicle which happens to be moving just after the victim goes down and simply assumes that the vehicle is related to the crime- the chances of an untrained person being able to determine the direction from which the shot came in a congested area is probably nil. Witnesses are going to note movement more sound; they will tend to ignore static cars and focus on vehicles or other objects in motion, particularly sudden motion. That doens't mean witnesses actually see the correct vehicle- nor does it even mean the perp is using a vehicle. It merely means witnesses' attention was drawn to one particular vehicle by coincidence or because it really was related to the crime.

There is no guarantee the witnesses' perception is accurate.

Apparently cell phone used was suspended nationwide tonight for about an hour after this lastest shooting....My mother in lower SC tried to call home several times; cell phone not working then. When she got home local TV (Charleston, SC) announced cell phone use suspension...can anyone else confirm or source this?
I could understand the immediate VA area but nationwide?????

That's where my mind was wandering to... (Even if this sniper isn't a terrorist, they're learning a lot from this)
