Amid Sniper Search, Another Man Shot Dead in Va.
October 11, 2002 11:23 AM ETWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police said a man was shot at a gasoline station near Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Friday, and media reports said he later died of his wounds in a local hospital.
The shooting touched off a renewed hunt for a white van, as investigators searched for a sniper who has killed seven people and wounded two others in a week-long murder spree.
However, police said they could not confirm a connection between Friday's shooting and the series of sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C., area. Two of the sniper's victims were killed at area gasoline stations.
The Friday shooting occurred near a state-police barracks just off a busy highway in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
"We're on the lookout for a white Chevrolet Astro van last seen going northbound on Route 1," said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.
Exits along highway I-95, the major interstate on the U.S. East Coast, were closed in the Virginia area.
