Let me speculate here: could this be an indication of shooting from a room/the parking lot of the motel?

Or the sound was amplified and directed by the acoustics of firing from inside the bed of a truck or inside a van.

Resport last night said the gun was an M-16 or AR-15. Don't think the report of such gun in open space would make the sound he's describing...but opinions about whats "loud" differ bettween people.

I heard a former FBI guy say the other day that profiling has NEVER solved a case....good police work does.....I don't know if that is true, but I thought it was interesting considering that the FBI has profilers. LOL! Good police work RARELY solves a crime like this (stranger murder). This guy is cunning. There are only two ways this guy will get caught:

1. Sniper makes a mistake and is caught (leaves a witness behind, gun is traced, etc.)
2. Sniper is turned in by an informant. See Ted Kazinski (sp?)

Beyond that you can pretty much forget about catching this guy. See the Antrhrax Killer for another example of what a clever evil person can do.

I don't know if he had to see the Trooper. I think it more likely if he had, he would have driven away before shooting.

Have considered terrorism from the beginning...if there are people in the van recording these horrific events, you're right, it could be for use in training/recruiting videos for AQ.
