My husband is 31 and $100,000 is totally laughable. I imagine there are some single people who were making 80K per year for a number of years...maybe they are close?

I did it in a shorter time, and on far less average income than 80k. Most people have unnecessarily high living expenses, and tend to front-load the cost of big purchases. I personally don't see how it could be hard to save $100k by the time you are 32, and I live in an expensive part of the US.

Fiscal discipline is a lost art.

My husband spent the years between 18 and 27 in the Navy making less than 20k per year. We had one child and I was a stay at home mom. That's how hard it CAN be.

We could have made different decisions. If retiring rich were our goal, we would have. The person who commented that the 32 year old "should have" saved 100k by them is woefully out of touch with MOST people.
