What is entirely plausible, is that the only casing found is actually a plant. Normally when I go to the range, there are always several empty casings on the ground, .223, 30-06, .308 etc, and a slew of other "common" calibers.

Whoever this dirtbag shooter is, and as sick as it sounds, he's a pro. He knows the terrain, and an expert at concealment, evasion and escape. "Losing" a spent case on the ground goes against everything this killer has done up to now. But dropping someone else's spent casing to throw investigators off is entirely possible.
