Maryland Sniper Shootings Update Thread
CNN, Fox, Local Radio and Television | October 8, 2002 | CNN, Fox, Breaking News

Posted on 10/08/2002 3:36:37 AM PDT by Peach

It's 6:30 a.m. EST and we're waiting to go to the second press conference providing media and local updates on the Maryland sniper shootings. To date, the 13 year old boy has survived the evening and seems to be improving. Fox News mentioned that his aunt is a nurse. The police briefing at 6:15 a.m. mentioned Todd Beamer's Let's Roll comment and police are urging people to use caution, good judgment, but remain strong and try to continue with everyday life as much as possible.

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

Has anyone mentioned if the shooter is forming a pattern or symbol out of his shootings just as the boy did not to long ago with the pipe bombs in the mail boxes? I believe he was making a smiley face.

Yes, this has been discussed. A star and cresent has been bandied about.

I am assuming it is the standard NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) round developed to avoid all members from having incompatible ammunition and rifles.

Yes, that is the case. IMO was chosen because it is one of the 3 most common rounds in the U.S. today. By using a very common round it's more difficult to track. Imagine trying to track all the AR-15 type rifles sold in the U.S.

What does NATO stand for? Does all ammo have NATO?

North Atlantic Treaty Organization... They made a standard for ammunition that (eventually) all member nations issued rifles for. This was to standardize supply on the future battlefields of West Germany. NATO standards are not necessarily the same as SAAMI standards, which are the standards to which American civilian ammunition is built.

That 233 is a misprint.

Good, I'm out of room in the locker right now and can't buy any more rifles... (grin)

Man on Greta's show says the shot sounded like something very large falling on a tin roof! Someone was asking about this earlier. Does that help?

I hate it when that happens. I was storing some for a friend and then later I was doing the same for my son. When I returned everything I had all this room so I ordered a '03A3 from the CMP.

appendix=pancreas

Hmm, yeah, that would have been an odd path of damage - appendix, spleen, diaphragm, lung.

Anyway, this kid's dining choices have suddenly become fairly restricted. The pancreas is important to metabolism and digestion. Processing of carbohydrates and proteins in the digestive tract is done in large part by pancreatic enzymes.

The spleen is not as much an issue - it plays a role in white blood cell synthesis. It's so difficult to repair surgically due to its vascularity. However, the body's immune response is less powerful afterwards.

He's better off alive than dead, though, I'm fairly sure.

That's an excellent description of a .223. The higher pitch of the sound and everything. The man has it right and that isn't the sound of the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

Doug Duncan, the Mont County Executive made the statement over the weekend that at least are schools were safe. One of the FBI profilers pointed out that, it was stupid thing to say in that it begged the terrorists to go out and shoot a kid at a school, so as to prove that no one was safe.

Well, they say that different rifles and cartridges sound different, but I honestly couldn't ever tell them apart very well. It all sounds the same - thud, then crack! The best I can say is that the ouder the thud, the bigger (more powder) the cartridge.

To simulate this, get some of those snappers they used to sell - a little powder charge wrapped in paper that kids throw against concrete. Get a wood floor and a sack of potatoes. Simultaneously drop the sack on the floor and throw the snapper. That's what rifle fire sounds like to me through earmuffs.

I wanted to order one too, but I've got two AR-15 lowers I need to build up before that. How well does your '03 work?

Shooting a handgun is not as easy as people think.

I know. This comes from growing up and watching the "good cowboys" shoot the "bad cowboys" off horses at a full gallp from 100 yards awaym with a Colt "Peacemaker". Not to mention Beretta chasing a guy for 343 blocks across rooftops, and then pulling his snubby 38 Special out of his sock, and shooting the bad guy in the leg from a half-block away.

That County Executive is one dumb Democrat! All he spouts off about is "FEAR".

That feeds right into the sniper(s) ego...especially if they turn out to be a terrorist cell.

Since some of you west coasters are still around, thought I'd mention the local news here in Merryland just reported a double homicide in Baltimore. Went out of their way to say "no suspect, no motive."

Probably just another Baltimore murder but thought I'd throw it out there.
